Sagada '10: Surviving Sagada

Day 01
Okay so here’s the scenario. I got off from a 16 hour duty. It was not an ordinary 16hour duty because ER was like a warzone that afternoon. I took the 11:55pm bus to Baguio and after approximately 16 hours of travel from Manila only did I arrived in Sagada. Wala pa ring tulog at puro na lang gising. Haay..
By lunchtime, we were in Sagada. We registered ourselves first at the municipal hall.

Registration first.

Malas naman.

After eating, nagpalit lang at larga na. Guess what the activity was. Trekking. Not just an ordinary trekking because we hiked two mountains! The road was steep and long. Very long. Kuya Randy, our tour guide, approximated our hike about 10 kilometers! Wooh.
So, 16 hour duty + 16 hour travel + almost 8 hours hike = 40 hours awake! And I’m still alive!! Haha

The first stop on out hike was Mt. Ampacao. Let the pictures speak for it.

Taking a break.

The part of hiking I like the most is when you’re too tired to speak and all you can hear is your heartbeat pounding and when you stop to catch your breath, the view around you is just amazing and you just can’t wait what the peak of the mountain looks.
Along the way, we saw giant ferns, wild berries, wild cows and more trails. I was curious to see what the field of wild berries look like in September/October. Just imagine crossing that.

We were supposed to wait for the sunset at Lake Danum but we decided to finish the hike because we were too tired and badly needed a shower. When I tried to lie down, I suddenly felt my sleeplessness of 40 freaking hours! So to not encourage the feeling, we ended the trek. Tapusin na ang kahibangan na to.

Lake Danum

We passed the Sagada Pottery along the way and took a quick tour. Ate was more than willing to show us around even though they’re closed already. It was amazing to learn that every single thing in place took less than a year to finish.  They were just four of them who run the place and they never thought of mass producing.

So, finally we arrived at our inn. Not minding the thickness of dirt stuck in our toes and all over us, we had our dinner. Tsaka palang kami naligo. I tell you, when I washed my feet, I thought the water was brown. I can’t believe the layer of dirt in my feet!

To cap up our first night, we headed down to Yoghurt House for their famous yogurt. Wirika is not fond of yogurt so she had tea. Medyo maasim, but it’s good. It was so thick. Granola for me!

Yoghurt House

Mejo uminom lang on the first night because call time the next day was early. Two shots the most just to warm ourselves. But Joc wasn’t able to sleep so he did what he does best. Piss off Leah. Hehe

Day 02
6am was the supposed call time and surely enough we woke up late. We were supposed to watch the parade because it was fiesta  in Sagada that day. But we decided to do the cave connection early. Kuya Randy said we were supposed to finish by two in the afternoon.  And so, we started our cave connection at the entrance of Lumiang Burial Cave. And I tell you, we were not prepared for the cave. Not really. Not an inch.
I executed positions I never thought I could. I was able to fit in places I never thought I could. My adrenaline was on its peak every single hole I try to squeeze in, every descent I tried to do and every bangin I tried to cross. I was gripping every rock I could hold on. How I wish I have suction on hands and feet so I wouldn’t worry on falling. The whole time I was thinking, I should really have said my proper goodbyes.

Entrance to Lumiang Burial Cave

Lunch inside the cave.

After almost six grueling hours of spelunking, we finally saw the end of the cave. Finally, there was light. You have no idea how grateful we were when we finally had sat near the Sumaguing cave’s opening. Relief. Indeed, it was a relief. Well, the story is different for wirika. She went out first, sans Kuya Randy’s gas lamp and was only relying on his instruction “Diretso lang..” without any fear of the possibility that she might step on a cliff. Nothing is more powerful than the call of nature. Walang sinabi Gatorade.

Follow the light.

Sumaguing Exit

We walked back home. I tell you that was our mode of transportation. Walking. Other groups came in vans, jeeps but Kuya Randy made us walked! Ha. Great! So, we headed home to change for cleaner clothes because we all look like we collected all the dirt from the two caves. I changed my shorts because it got ripped. I don’t know where it happened. Good thing we were near the end when someone noticed. I borrowed Leah’s shorts. I still can’t believe it suits me.
So off we go to the last stop for the day since Big Falls was closed, we resorted for the Small Falls. On the way, we crossed rice fields and did a bit of river crossing. At one point, we have to dip our foot in a one foot of mud. Even though it will not be as beautiful as the Big Falls, Small falls was breathtaking as well. After all, it’s a falls.

Born again cabbage.

Small Falls

We stayed for while.
We saw a jet line, which I later asked my friends at work who were at Mt.Pulag at the time if they saw it too. And they did. It was like; we were really just under the same sky.
It was our last night. And all were exhausted. We had dinner at Yoghurt House. Had a few beers with Kuya Randy but later bailed on us when we decided to continue the drinking session at our place. I guess he really follows the curfew.
After some booze, we all slept. Leah was even dreaming that she was crossing cliffs inside the caves. After almost one whole day of adventure, maybe, it was really hard to take it all in.
It was our last night in Sagada.
And our last morning.
Morning view from George Guest House

I was already feeling the homesickness on our bus ride back to Baguio. I can’t believe it was all over.  So I decided to sit next to the window.
I read somewhere that Sagada is the perfect place to propose. So when she says no, she still has the almost 13 hours ride back to Manila to think it over.
But for me, it was perfect place to think.  Sit anywhere, appreciate the scene and watch one whole day pass you by without worrying.
Coming back from sagada, I may not have found the answers to my life’s endless questions, but I have a clearer understanding of it. i get out of this place a better person, more whole than ever before.
future might not be fixed for me.but i trust Him and myself that whatever happens,i will be just fine.no matter what.
so i will be back to my job, to my three year old routine life with better eyes and better mind.
I hope so.

I didn't include the pasalubong. Anlaki kasi ng nagastos ko. Nakakahiya.

El Nido 2011: Tour E? Tour A!

I’m always intrigued by El Nido, Palawan. It has always been depicted as Palawan’s last frontier. Beaches untouched, rich marine life, etc. Besides, if someone says Palawan, El Nido comes first to anyone’s mind, not Coron or Puerto Princesa. So, I was so hyped on this trip. After seeing Coron, I’m expecting all the more.

So, you can imagine my disappointment when I finally saw the place. I didn't even remembered the names of the places we've been. Yeah, El Nido has its own charm and all. But it was nothing compared to Coron.

Pero binawi naman ni Kamahalang Joy, our beloved tour guide at ni Ate Pysche, our ever landlady sa kakulitan at sagad sa butong mga jokes. Panalo sa comedy.

So, we arrived a little late than expected. Partly, me kasalanan kami kasi late check in na kami.

She was already in Puerto Princesa three days before.

Kuya X (Bet, nakalimutan ko name ni Kuya) offered us his van for a Php700. He said we just have to wait for the van to be filled. And we were his first passengers. Ok. Mahaba-habang antayan to. Beth had the idea of asking people around but unfortunately, no one was heading to El Nido. Before we decided to just simply go to the terminal to take the public vans, Kuya X agreed to leave even if his van is not full. Luckily, he got two Koreans a minute before we left the airport.

Almost halfway along the trip goes our first El Nido joke.

Eh kuya, ano nman po yung Tour A?
Kuya X: Yun nga po mam, Tour E (A) po. Tour E (A)
Beth: ----

We arrived almost 3pm in El Nido and checked in at Casa Buenavista. The rest of the afternoon, we lazily walked around town looking for the best eats and just taking in the feel of the town.  Back to our guesthouse, they said it has been two days na walang electricity. Luckily, nagkaroon na pagkadating namin. Yun pala, nung araw lang palang yun magkakaroon. We were searching the town for some seafood, specifically lobster. Unfortunately, hindi daw in season. Squids and shrimp were the only ones available. Pati crabs wala. So much for seafood.

Unlimited coffee, tea and water. View from the balcony

We ate a not-so-good dinner that night and went to bed early. Maaga call time bukas.
Weather wasn’t pleasant that morning. Si haring araw pakipot.

Our golden breakfast at The Alternative

So, our first stop was..

Take note, makipigil hiningang boat ride ang dinaanan naming bago kami nakarating sa aming unang destinasyon.

The island is a private place. It used to be a functional area. Masses and retreats were usually held on the island until it was neglected. Ang sarap sigurong magretreat dito.

We did a bit of snorkeling.

This is where I was a bit disappointed. Because the sea was a little rough, snorkeling was difficult. And there were not a single fish in sight. There were some fish, yes. But it was nothing compared to Coron. Blame it on the bad weather. Maybe next time when the weather is much better, El Nido might have been nice.

Credible name for a lifevest.

Lunch came..

We stayed longer than expected because of the weather. All this time, the sun was nowhere in sight. Crap.

Inenjoy na lang naming kung ano meron that day prompting us to go home early. At walang kuryente pagdating namin. Good luck sa mga batteries namin. We had dinner at a certain restaurant by the strong recommendation of some locals. We ordered the well known Nido Soup, on which the owner strongly assured was pure. But when we tasted it, we felt lumps of powder, so much for eating an authentic Nido soup.

Nido Soup

No nightlife for us that night.

We woke up early the next day to buy some fresh seafood. We plan to have whatever we bought as dinner later tonight. But due to the bad weather and the town’s fiesta last night, no one was up that early and there were not a single fish that can be bought in the market. Empty wet market, that is.

Empty market.

We went back feeling a bit disappointed, knowing we’ll be having pork for lunch.

Goat fish. Notice its goatee.

We were granted a better weather on our last day of island hopping. The sea was still a bit rough but much better compared yesterday.
Somewhere between the boat trips and island hopping, Ate Joy cracked another joke.

Ate Joy:  ..pwede niyo ngang akyatin ‘yang mga bundok diyan. Nung bagong dating ako dito, umakyat ako.
Us:  Talaga ate?
Us:  Me tour guide po kayo?
Us: ..certificate po?..
Ate Joy:  Oo. Certificate. Death Certificate.

At the Big Lagoon, we had fun kayaking. We took turns paddling. When it was Beth's turn to paddle, Kuya said. Mam, ayaw ko pa pong mamatay, which made us all laugh. Sense of humor, eh? He was from Navotas and when Ondoy hit Manila, he was washed away by the typhoon here in El Nido. That's his story. No edit there. The crew we were with that day had a lot sense of humor. Though the weather's not great and we were not able to go at certain places, they made it up with all their jokes and stories. Sometimes, it's not the place but it's who your with that matters more.

Back at Casa, Ate Psyche has been worried sick about us. It was already dark when we got back, which, according to her, was unusual unless something happened. We saw the relief on her face when she saw us finally set foot on the house. Nakakatouch.

We were in luck, we had electricity that night. We had dinner at Habibi Restaurant. I even got a free drink because my meal was served late. Haha.

We talked a bit more before we heading to our place. The van will be picking us up tomorrow at seven in the morning. No reason to be late or else we will be spending another day in El Nido. We arrived at Puerto Princesa past noon. As pasalubongs, we bought some cultured pearls. Our flight got delayed for about an hour so we will be arriving in Manila later than expected. Cebu Pacific talaga. At least, we saw the Super Moon closer. The view above was incredible. We see the sun sets at our left and the Super Moon rising to our right.

Super Moon

It will be hard for me to forget El Nido because it made a mark on me. Literally. As I was swimming back to the boat from Secret Lagoon, I held on to the rope leading to our boat when a huge wave came over me, my right knee hit one of the stones nearby. I looked down and saw this huge gush of blood from my knee. Beth, who was beside me at the time, and I looked at each other shocked of what just happened. I wasn't feeling anything at the moment. When I got to the boat, everyone was shaken on what they saw. Dripping blood down to my knee. Deeper than a minor cut, I can see some tissues. I bet the fish were a having a feast. But I was glad that it's just a minor cut. Beth said it might probably need some stitches but I convinced her it will be healed in a week, tops. Just the thought of stitches make me sick. Good thing there was a first aid kit and Beth was there. And it was the last day of the island hopping. It would be a bummer if it happened on the first day.

Me. Post accident.
